HOW QUESTIONING TAKES YOU DEEPER

Exploring your experience in the open, interested, and questioning manner we’ve been discussing naturally takes you from splashing at the surface to diving down into the magical depths. How?

In the ocean of the inner world, the surface is the context: the external circumstances, relationships, and activities of life that are more visible and obvious to us.

When you look a little deeper than the outer circumstances, you come to the thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations that you have about that situation. These are the contents with which your head, heart, and belly centers are occupied, the conventional experiences that people think of in terms of mind, feelings, and body. This is a next level in, and you have already been noticing it as you check in.

These conventional experiences are influenced by your history through various associations and connections. The way you respond to a particular situation arising now will be based on what the situation evokes in you, and part of what it may evoke are the associations and impressions of similar experiences from the past. Your conditioning and history pervade the inner ocean, shaping the more obvious shallows of your conventional feelings, thoughts, and reactions.

Spiritual experiences and the more profound experiences of life come from even deeper. You could say that these are the very nature of your head, heart, and belly centers. These are the jewels of the inner ocean. You may recognize moments your very depths themselves seem to come forward, when you feel something that touches you all the way through. It might be a deep sense of meaning or fulfillment or connection; a sense of kindness and friendliness or truthfulness and realness that fills your experience; or maybe a sense of power or immense solidity or the feeling of your very aliveness itself. These are some of the qualities of your inner human nature, your consciousness, your beingness, the hidden properties of the very waters of the inner ocean.

We call these qualities of presence. They are not ideas or thoughts, not the usual emotional reactions, and not the regular sensations in your physical body. They affect all of those things, and mostly people tend to be aware of those effects at the beginning. But it is possible to go further than these familiar effects—to recognize directly and immediately the presence itself. Presence has an immediate, palpable hereness with all these different qualities. Experientially, it is the very stuff of your consciousness, your human nature in its purity. It is always operating hidden in the depths of the inner ocean. Presence is the hidden treasure that we go diving for.

Inquiry takes you deeper, because all of these levels of experience are not separate, even though you may be unconscious of them at first. They are always meaningfully related and connected. Your outer activities and relationships affect you. You have various related thoughts, feelings, sensations, and urges. As you begin to see what those more inner experiences are and how they are related
